Introducing Cossington Flood Group

30th May 2013
Following the November floods, which had a particular impact on the school and the surrounding area of the village, we have formed a village flood group in conjunction with Sedgemoor District Council. The aims of the group are:
To reassess the flood risk situation in Cossington, particularly in light of the flooding last November
To develop a plan for action and ongoing maintenance to mitigate against flood risk in the future
The group comprises Martin Dare and George Terry (representing the Parish Council), Tom Davies (School governor) and Margaret Offer (resident) – along with Phil Perkins and Richard Dunne from Sedgemoor’s Land and Drainage department.
It is in its early stages at the moment but we are already:
Subscribing the village to Sedgemoor’s new sandbag provision scheme
Investigating improvements to the village’s watercourses and drain maintenance scheduling in conjunction with Somerset County Council
Evaluating the possibility of a grant through the County’s flood mitigation fund for specific measures (e.g. flood gates for the school)
