Big Tree Stone - Completion Update

30th January 2016

back to NEWS PAGE >>

After over 18 months of hard work and perseverance, the stone monolith erected in memory of the famous "Big Tree" is virtually complete following the insertion of the white Portland Stone plaque into the Welsh Pennant Sandstone monolith late in December.

All that remains now is for the wooden bench on the stone surround to be re-varnished - which will be done when weather condiitons are suitable.

We have put an entry about the Big Tree on the Find Out More about Cossington section of this website - which includes old photos of the Big Tree along with photos following the development process from intial ideas to near completion - and a copy of a related article from "The Link" magazine from 1979.

Our thanks are due to the Stradling family for funding the monolith and carrying out most of the installation work - and to local stone artist Nigel Alway for the excellent representation of a young growing Elm Tree on the Portland Stone plaque - and for the painstaking  and neat installtion of the plaque which took two full days to complete.
