Big Tree Memorial Stone Installed

10th September 2015

The Monolith to remember the Big Tree on the corner of Middle Road and Bell Lane took a big step forward on Thursday 10th September when the 4 ton piece of Welsh Pennant Sandstone was carefully craned into position into the pre-prepared site – with final adjustments being made with wooden chocks before cementing it into place.

There is still some work to do to finish the structure including:

  • Removing the wooden chocks and putting the final cement layer in place

  • Surfacing the cemented area with a suitable decorative layer (e.g. stone chippings)

  • Finalising where best to site the white Portland Stone relief carving of a young Elm tree

  • Refinishing the surrounding wooden bench

  • Possibly including a small plaque describing the history and legend of the Big Tree
